რაც შეეხება ძველ საბერძნეთს - რომლის მიღწევებზეც იგი აღიარებული იყო საუკუნეების მანძილზე მზარდი ენთუზიაზმით, დასავლური ცივილიზაციის  დამაარსებლად - ის შეიძლება ყოფილიყო უზარმაზარი კულტურული ცენტრი, მაგრამ არასოდეს ყოფილა ეგრეთ წოდებული "დასავლური ღირებულებების" ერთადერთი წყარო. თანაბრად გავლენიანი იყო მესოპოტამია, ბაბილონი და აღმოსავლეთის სხვა ტერიტორიები.
