Laschet, 60, emerged as the conservatives’ undisputed nominee on Tuesday after his main challenger, Bavarian leader Markus Söder, conceded. The two men — both leaders of their respective parties, Laschet of the Christian Democrats (CDU) and Söder of Bavaria’s Christian Social Union (CSU) — engaged in an intense, 10-day battle for the candidacy that opened a deep rift in their center-right alliance, known as the Union. Many party faithful worry that the lingering bad blood over the contest, which pitted Laschet, the favorite of his party’s old guard, against Söder, described by one ally as the “candidate of hearts,” could dash the bloc’s chances of holding onto power after Merkel’s 16-year reign ends following September’s national election.
