It was time to move on, but before doing so I had to make my traditional stop at Red Partisan Street and have a deep-dark-conspiracy conversation with my refugee sister pals Nunu and Nana Chachua.

Their attitude toward the conflict was not surprising.

“Let the Russians come and bomb Tbilisi a bit so that the people here understand what we had to get used to in 1993 in Sukhumi, and then let the Russians occupy the country, demilitarize it, and turn us into a neutralized satellite state. At least we will know where to sell our wine,” said Nunu, or something to that effect.

Nothing new in that regard; the only question was how many other Georgians shared Nunu’s deeply cynical attitude toward almost everything having to do with Mikheil Saakashvili.

But it was there that I met Nunu Chachua. She was the commercial director of the theater and had thrown open the doors of the building to use as the Gamsakhurdia HQ. She was also Medea, a raven-haired beauty with dark almonds for eyes, who was tough as nails, and possessed an absolutism that was both splendid and frightening.

“In America, the man you elect president serves four years,” she noted. “And if you don’t like him, you can vote him out, correct?”

“Yes . . .”

“And as the head of the state, he is entitled to defend his government from armed gangs who want to interfere in that process, correct?”

“Yes . . .”

“And in a general sense, America would like to promote that style of government, democracy, throughout the world, correct?”

“Yes . . .”

“Then why do you make an exception with Georgia? All we want is the return of the legitimate president of the country, whom we elected, and whom we can vote out of office if we no longer trust him!” I tried to interject something but was overruled by Nunu. “Shall I tell you why the situation here is different?”

“Yes . . .”

“Shevardnadze.”

“But he’s in Moscow,” I tried to add.

“Today,” she spat. “But tomorrow he will be here. All the chaos and suffering you have witnessed in your short time in Georgia is a direct result of your great democratic friend Shevardnadze’s attempt to seize power and drive Georgia back into the USSR.”

It was a bit rich as far as conspiracy theories went, and I tried to tell her so.

“Nunu,” I said for starters. “There is no longer a USSR.”

“You will see,” she smiled. “First, Shevardnadze will return and create a national guard because he will say he is a Georgian Nationalist, which is a lie. Then the National Guard will destroy Sukhumi. Then the Abkhazians will revolt with the help of the Russians and bring chaos to the land. Then Shevardnadze will bring Georgia back into the USSR. Then he will beg for Russian soldiers to come and save him from the wrath of the people.”

As I said, it all seemed a bit rich. The problem was that although it took a couple of years to germinate, almost all of it turned out to be true.

“Alex,” I said. “You have to admit that each and every one of Zviad’s paranoid predictions have come true—the rape of Sukhumi by the Mkhedrioni . . .”

“ . . . and finally by Shevardnadze’s bringing Georgia into the CIS . . .”

“Your arguments are all correct and are all based in experience and objective fact but still lack the essential subjective element.”

“Which is?”

“This is Georgia, Soviet Georgia. Not ‘post-Soviet’ or ‘independent’ or any of the other constructions you journalists and researchers from the West come up with but Soviet Georgia, the place subjected to the game of smoke and mirrors for the past seventy years. . . . It is not your American state by the same name where one and one equals two, or maybe three. Here it equals five, or maybe six. I cannot prove it to you logically. But if you live here long enough you will know it does equal five or six or seven, too.”

“Alex, you are drunk . . .”

“Yes, of course I am—because I am Georgian. But while we are drunk, why not consider this as an alternative to your Shevardnadze scenario? A catastrophe! You have seen what has happened with all the nationalist leaders and parties in the Caucasus—unmitigated disaster and human suffering! A catastrophe! Look at Azerbaijan! Look at Chechnya! Have you ever considered that those very same lumpen-nationalist leaders, all of whom spent enough time in KGB jails or in the security services to be ‘turned,’ are not the real agents of destruction in their native lands? A catastrophe! Think about that, I beg you!”

Sasha was such a devoted admirer of Eduard Shevardnadze that he said he would lay down his life for his leader—or take the leader’s life if things got too bad.1

“You still don’t understand, do you,” she said. “It is all a big, bloody game. The reason that Shevardnadze can travel about so freely is because the Russians know where he is and do not fire on that sector.”

“Nunu,” I tried. “What you are suggesting is nuts. Unless Shevardnadze is wearing some special locator device that allows every last one of the Abkhaz or Russian gun positions to know exactly where he is, and unless their aim is so good and their weaponry more accurate than the smart bombs the Americans used in the Gulf War, what you are suggesting is physically impossible.”

“Really,” smiled Nunu. “Then explain this to me. Have you been to Stalin’s dacha, up the road from the botanical gardens?”

“Yes, I was there this morning.”

“Would you say that it is located in such a way that it is totally exposed to land-based artillery, sea guns, and air power?”

“Yes.”

“Then why is it that the attacking forces have not hit it once, while they have concentrated on civilian targets of no military interest whatsoever? Think about it.

In a letter to the United Nations general secretary, written in the style of having a one-sided conversation with an imaginary friend from afar, Shevardnadze poured out his heart on paper: “Amidst the deafening burst of bombs and shells, amidst the distressed cries of people doomed to death, not a single word of protest, not a single promise of help, not a single outcry of resentment and condemnation has reached us. . . . Could it be that the international community is so helpless, so blind and deaf to the universal evil? The world should be aware that the Evil Empire is still thriving, is still sowing the seeds of death, producing and deploying weapons of mass destruction, which are continuously claiming the lives of peaceful, utterly innocent people. . . .”

But it was all bullshit, copy churned out by someone far away, and sent for his signature. The Silver Fox was trapped, and knew it.

But so long as he was in the city, for the rest of us, there was hope. It seemed impossible that Sukhumi would really become “Shevy’s Last Stand,” or perhaps “Eduard’s Armageddon.” Sukhumi was too far from the venues usually associated with the man called the Silver Fox: the Kremlin, the White House, 10 Downing Street, the German Chancellery in Bonn, peopled by Shevardnadze’s interlocutors through the years: Mikhail Gorbachev, Margaret Thatcher, Helmut Kohl, George Bush, and James Baker III. The mantra was always the same: Shevy had helped lead the Soviet army out of the morass of Afghanistan; Shevy had negotiated the intermediate missiles agreement; Shevy had given the Soviet nod to the unification of Germany when the Berlin Wall came down; Shevy had let the long-time Soviet client, Saddam Hussein, dangle and then be pounded by the United States in the Gulf War. Even after he left office in December 1990, Shevardnadze had remained engaged in international arms control: that was the subject of the commencement address he made at Harvard in 1991. And now he was about to get blown up himself. The irony was almost intolerable.

For others, however, the idea that Eduard Shevardnadze was risking his life in Sukhumi was regarded as nothing more than a cynical sham. One of these was Nunu. Unlike Shevardnadze, who visited the frontlines, she lived on one. Every time I dodged through the side streets to her house she would take me inside, feed me with whatever food she had, uncork her diminishing supply of homemade brandy, and fill my ear with her pathological hatred of the man whom she blamed for the disaster visited upon her nation, her city, and her home: Shevardnadze.

But with mortars tearing up the very street she lived on, the subject had taken on a certain immediacy that it had lacked before, and the very danger of her position gave her the license to express unconventional ideas.

Nunu’s argument was succinct: Shevardnadze was not just a stooge, but also a major active player in the destruction of her country, a process many referred to as “the Georgia Syndrome,” the term she used to describe the literal destruction of those former Soviet republics that took the notion of post-Soviet independence seriously. And because Georgia was the most vigorously independence-oriented republic in the late-Soviet era, it was the first on the chopping block when Moscow began to rein in its wayward wards. Next came the “Tajikistan Variant,” followed by the “Azerbaijan Example,” and finally the “Chechen Conundrum.”

According to Nunu, the most salient aspects of this policy were economic subversion (cutting trade as well as energy supplies), creating or encouraging separatist conflicts by local minorities (all conveniently armed with weapons from “outside”), and Kremlin support of opposition groups (Russophile “intellectuals,” mainly) against the new, nationalist leadership (itself usually spiked with agent provocateurs and fifth-columnists).

“Can’t you see, or don’t you want to?” Nunu chided me. “The whole point is making us beg to return to Russia.”
