The CDU leader accuses Chancellor Scholz of not thinking strategically but instead focusing on surveys. He doesn't rule out a national nuclear umbrella - and wants to get back into nuclear power.

The Union accuses the Chancellor of weak leadership. But can Germany even take leadership in a conflict with a nuclear power if it has no nuclear weapons itself?

For me, leadership means ensuring that we Europeans, especially the French, the Poles and we Germans, speak with one voice.

Macron has offered Germany a dialogue on nuclear deterrence. What do you think of it?

I very much regret that the government did not accept this offer of talks. And unfortunately, there are apparently no substantive discussions about this topic to date.

So should the American nuclear umbrella be supplemented by cooperation with European nuclear powers?

In any case, I would like to see both the French and the British at the table in such discussions. A lot of things have to be discussed openly. We would have to ask our partners: What are you willing to share? What do you expect from us? And what would the decision-making mechanisms look like?

Should Germany also consider acquiring its own nuclear weapons if necessary?

Two years ago we could not have imagined what we would have to talk about today. And we can't imagine today what we might have to talk about tomorrow.

Another answer full of strategic ambiguity.

This topic is simply not suitable for public conjecture and speculation. It is the task of German and European politics to ensure that people on our continent can live in freedom, peace and security. This also includes a strong military deterrent.

What proportion of nuclear power do you want to achieve in order to ensure a secure energy supply?

Nuclear power would have to at least fill the gap left by wind and solar power, and this gap will be large. We will not reach the French level of 60 percent nuclear power. Whether it will end up being 10, 20 or 30 percent is not something we need to answer today.
