The Bundeswehr is expanding the canon of its soldiers, in whose tradition it wants to stand. For some Wehrmacht soldiers, people no longer want to take such a narrow view.

The turning point announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is now also changing the way traditions are maintained in the Bundeswehr. Until now, the tradition decree of 2018 has regulated the culture of remembrance in the troops, which is quite delicate in view of German history and the atrocities of the Wehrmacht. This decree remains valid, but is now being supplemented: in future, the Bundeswehr wants to place more emphasis on the military capability that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius proclaimed in view of the Russian war against Ukraine.

In the 2018 tradition decree , the Wehrmacht as a whole is described as not worthy of tradition. However, individual Wehrmacht soldiers can be included in the Bundeswehr's traditions, provided they have distinguished themselves through an achievement such as "participation in the military resistance" against the National Socialists

Now this regulation is to be expanded: From now on, "not only those members of the Wehrmacht who can be assigned to the military resistance" but also those who helped to build up the Bundeswehr after 1945 are to be included in the Bundeswehr's canon of tradition. Because, as the supplementary information that the Head of the Department of Operational Readiness and Support of the Armed Forces in the Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Kai Rohrschneider, sent internally on July 12, 2024, states: "The approximately 40,000 former soldiers taken over from the Wehrmacht had largely proven themselves in combat and thus had war experience that was indispensable in building up the Bundeswehr

In future, the Bundeswehr will therefore need examples of "military excellence, readiness for action and the will to fight to achieve the goal when the mission requires it," says Rohrschneider, justifying the additional instructions in a directive. At the same time, however, the addition also warns against reducing military capability to "falling in action." While this remains "undoubtedly an example of soldierly virtues such as loyal and brave service," "it is not per se suitable as an example of tradition-creating military excellence, outstanding attitude or military success."

Attached to the supplement is a list of 24 "people who established traditions". Among others, this includes Brigadier General Heinz Karst, who criticized the "overemphasis on the civilian part in Innere Führung" in the Bundeswehr. The Ministry of Defense has something to say about him: "He was publicly criticized in the early 1970s for his positions on military fitness, including by the Spiegel magazine."

Or Colonel Erich Hartmann, "the most successful fighter pilot in military aviation" due to his 352 aerial victories in World War II. He later "criticized the introduction of the 'Starfighter'", the fighter aircraft that was notorious for its high crash rate. Rear Admiral Erich Topp, "one of the most successful submarine commanders in World War II", is also honored. The former member of the NSDAP and SS "took a very critical look at his own life and the role of the Navy in World War II after 1945".

Günter Knebel of the Federal Association of Victims of Nazi Military Justice, on the other hand, believes that honoring Wehrmacht soldiers is generally problematic. This reduces them to "purely military" status: "Here, the context in which the soldiers fought is ignored," he criticizes.

There are no timeless soldierly virtues, stresses Jakob Knab, spokesman for the Initiative Against False Glory, which takes a critical look at the Bundeswehr's preservation of traditions. "In this way, the Wehrmacht's ability to fight in war is dehistoricized and thus denazified." With the addition, the tradition decree is being "steered in the wrong direction," criticizes Knab. The Bundeswehr should not be able to fight in war, but rather be ready to defend itself: "It is enough if they take their soldier's oath seriously; there is no need for role models from the Wehrmacht."
