On Thursday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol presented his new doctrine for reunification with North Korea. "Only when a unified free and democratic nation, which rightfully belongs to the people, is created on the entire Korean peninsula will we finally achieve complete liberation," the 63-year-old said during a speech to celebrate the end of Japanese colonial rule (1910-45).

The conservative Yoon's vision differs greatly from the approach of his left-liberal predecessor Moon Jae, who was cautious about openly criticizing and making demands on the Kim regime. Yoon makes no secret of the fact that he wants to actively reform the North Korean system and ultimately undermine it. "We must be more proactive in extending the value of freedom to the North and drive forward substantial changes," he said.
