Criticism of the energy policy under the Chancellorship of Angela Merkel is growing in the CDU. "The Chancellor and we as the CDU let ourselves be driven too much by the mainstream," said the CDU member of the Bundestag Christian von Stetten to the "Spiegel". "I warned ten years ago that if we expand renewable energy without storage while phasing out 24-hour German nuclear and coal, we will become increasingly dependent on Russian gas." Stetten is also head of the influential parliamentary group for medium-sized companies in the Union faction.

There is also criticism of the energy course of the Merkel years among young CDU parliamentarians.  "Now at the latest it is proving to be a mistake that we are not more diversified in the supply," said Ronja Kemmer, member of the Bundestag and head of the young group in the Union faction.  "This is partly due to the fact that we have discussed many questions too ideologically and not enough openly to technology."  From today's perspective it would have been "of course" better to phase out coal first and then nuclear energy.

The CDU MP and Hamburg head of state Christoph Ploß made a similar statement.  "By phasing out nuclear power and coal at the same time, Germany has deliberately taken on a cluster risk in terms of energy supply," he told the "Spiegel".  "Contrary to all warnings, that was what society wanted, but the resulting dependence on Russian gas is now taking revenge in the face of Putin's war of aggression in Ukraine."

Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for an EU army risks destabilising Europe, Poland’s deputy prime minister has warned, describing the military assistance of the US and UK as “more important”.

Piotr Glinski said the Ukrainian resistance proved that a willingness to fight was the “most important” factor, and that he doubted if contemporary Europe was ready for such a conflict.

He also championed the nation state as best equipped to stand up to aggression, rather than political blocs.

His comments follow a renewed push from the French president earlier this month towards the creation of an EU army.

He wants Europe to be able to act militarily independently of the US and Nato, arguing the Ukrainian crisis had “changed the era” on the continent.

However, in an interview with the Telegraph, Mr Glinski said he favoured the status quo.
