CDU candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that if he wins the election he will confront the future US President Donald Trump "with his head held high." In foreign policy, Merz also wants to focus more on Germany's interests. "We must go from being a sleeping middle power to being a leading middle power again," Merz said in an interview with the "Stern" newspaper

"We have never really articulated and enforced our interests well enough in Germany, and we need to change that," Merz explains. He wants to take the offensive approach of the USA as an example. "It shouldn't end with only one side benefitting, but rather with us making good arrangements for both sides. Trump would call it a deal."

The FDP leader also warned the CDU, which is far ahead in the polls, against entering into a two-party alliance with the SPD or the Greens. He had previously ruled out a new edition of the traffic light coalition in an interview.
